For all those interested within the CWs vision of the DC universe, i.e. The Arrowverse, will be pleased to know that recent announcements have assured us that they intend to expand upon the universe. Not only have all the DC shows – Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DCs Legends of Tomorrow – been renewed for new seasons but we’ve also been told that John Constantine, reprised again by Matt Ryan, would be officially joining the franchise.

Constantine had already had a television series dedicated to him, starring Ryan, over on NBC but was tragically cancelled after only one season, due to poor ratings. However, fans were pleased to hear that Ryan would be coming back as Constantine via a cameo in Season 4 of Arrow (which was a great episode and a clear sign that his presence in The Arrowverse is duly welcomed).

Sadly, despite the successful cross-over event, Constantine didn’t seem to be returning for anymore live-action appearances anytime soon. “At this point in time, there are no plans to,” said Head of CW Mark Pedowitz at the 2017 winter Television Critics’ Association. “I would love to have Matt. I think that was a great episode in Season 4. Matt adds a dimension to the show as the character.”

Unfortunately the latest news didn’t reveal Ryan would be returning in a live-action role but rather a role within his own animated series on CW Seed (which is a good substitute in my books). Like Vixen, the series is speculated to consist of short animated stories set within The Arrowverse (so here’s hoping that Constantine gets to interact with Green Arrow again and maybe even Flash and other characters).

The new animated show will be produced by Greg Berlanti (once again returning as his role as head of The Arrowverse) along with David Goyer, who executive produced the original NBC show. Pedowitz had this to say on Constantine’s inclusion within The Arrowverse, “They’re all somewhat connected now to the Arrowverse for our purposes. We look at CW Seed as an extension. It’s great to have Constantine. It’s a great message to everybody that ‘come to CW Seed and don’t be bored.'”

As well as officially joining the CW universe Ryan is also participating within the latest DC Universe Original Movie, Justice League Dark, where he will also be returning as Constantine as a member of Justice League Dark. So it’s fair to say we have a lot to look forward to when it comes to Ryan’s interpretation of Constantine. Here’s hoping if the animated series goes well we can expect a larger role for him within The Arrowverse in the near future, as well as future appearances within DCs animated film universe.

  1. For consistency’s sake it is good to see that Ryan reprised his role in Justice League Dark. I don’t think his performance was that great though. His voice seemed off, even though he is British.
